Medicine Bow Ride - First Wyoming ride for WyCROC 09-Sep-00

There were 5 roadsters with owners and others that met at Gary Boone's house Sat morning. There was Tom & Livy Holland ('68 2000), Mark McCafferty ('67 2000), Rob Gardner ('68 2000), Donald Swenson ('70 1600), and Gary Boone ('70 2000). Eric Frisbee had last minute technical difficulties with the roadster, but came to join the ride anyway, along with family and Clayton Allmon. We took Happy Jack Road (State Hwy 210) out of Cheyenne (passing a broken down Fiat Spyder), past Curt Cowdy State Park, through the eastern portion of Medicine Bow National Forest. In Laramie, we took Snowy Range Road (State Hwy 130) to the Snowy Range Pass (El. 10,847 ft.). Mirror Lake was our picnic site right at the base of Medicine Bow Peak (El.12,013 ft.), where Clayton Allmon demonstrated his chef skills with tasty burgers and brauts. This was a welcome treat after a very coool ride!!!

Eric Frisbee adds:
Medicine Bow ride! Gary, Shuler (his wife) and Valarie (his daughter) are some GREAT hosts! Not only did they open their house up for wayward WyCROCer's for the night, but they also provided a fabulous feast for those who made it up that night! There was more than enough food to go around! We can't forget the beer and tunes in the garage as well, while looking over the beauties! The next morning, brought the riders all together and we left after a provisioning run by Shuler.
The trip up to Medicine Bow was perhaps one of the more spectacular I have ever been on, although rather windy. If you have never been up there, I would highly recommend it! Once there, we commensed to feast yet again. I can't even begin to describe just HOW much food was there, but if you left hungry, it was certainly your own fault!! Afterwards, we had some great photo ops.
And I can't forget one of the highlights of my trip either... My wifes car had last minute technical difficulties, namely the alternator bolt (the bottom one) decided to go away on a "test" drive I took to work the night before, so we couldn't take the roadster (and it was raining hard and with no wipers...) Oops, that's not a highlight...
a highlight is getting to ride in that Blue rocket of Garys!! It was VERY hard not to smile while racing up those mountain roads! I didn't find the suspension nearly as rough on the body as I would have expected though... Gary's car was just amazing!! And another highlight was getting to drive Mark McCafferty's '67 1600 w/2000 transplant while he rode with Gary. Another amazing roadster!! If you haven't seen that car, try to catch up to him sometime!! The trip back was equally great with some great views, but as we were pulling into Cheyenne, Tom Hollands car started to act up. That night (after more feasting!) we pulled Toms car into the garage and found a very loose distributor... and then had a impromptu tech session! We got him running again and learned a bit about a modification Gary has done to his car...ask him about how he did away with those points! Sadly, the day ended and we had to go.
On the trip back, we were about 20 minutes behind Tom and Livy Holland (luckily!) and found them on the side of the road with a dead roadster in the middle of a nice traffic jam (not caused by them though) I thought it was the fuel pump, because I didn't see any fuel pumping, but it turns out it was that little wire in the distributor causing the problems. The joys of roadster ownership never cease! At any rate, I think a great time was had by all WyCROCer's who showed up! Thanks Gary and family for a wonderful time and the many feasts!! Condolences to all the dead roadsters... Michelles '67 w/alternator woes, Dan Neff with the dead clutch, and Tom Holland with the distributor (at least you got to go on the ride though!! ;) )
